Condo Insurance

What is Condo Insurance?

Condo insurance is a type of insurance policy that is designed specifically for condo owners. It is a type of property insurance that provides protection for the interior of your unit, as well as your personal belongings and liability coverage. Unlike homeowners’ insurance which provides coverage for the entire property, including the exterior of the home and the land it sits on, condo insurance only covers the interior of your unit and your personal property.

What does Condo Insurance cover?

Condo insurance typically includes the following types of coverage:

  • Personal Property: This provides protection for your personal belongings, such as furniture, clothing, electronics, and appliances, in the event they are stolen, damaged, or destroyed.
  • Liability: This coverage provides protection for you if someone is injured while on your property, or if you accidentally damage someone else’s property.
  • Building Property: This coverage provides protection for the building structure and any common areas such as the lobby or parking garage. It can also cover damage caused by natural disasters including hurricanes, floods, or earthquakes.
  • Loss of Use: This coverage provides protection for you in the event that your condo becomes uninhabitable, such as due to a fire or other disaster. It can also cover additional living expenses like hotel costs while your condo is being repaired.

Is Condo Insurance Required?

Many condo/homeowner associations require their members to have condo insurance although it is not typically required by law. Even if your condo association does not require insurance, it is still highly advisable to have it. Without condo insurance, you could be left with expensive repair bills or liability costs in the event of an accident, theft, or other unexpected event.

Is Condo Insurance Different from Homeowners Insurance?

While condo insurance and homeowners insurance are similar in some ways, there are several key differences. Homeowners insurance covers the entire property, including the exterior of the home and the land it sits on. Condo insurance will only cover the interior of your unit and your personal property. Homeowners insurance may also include coverage for damage caused by natural disasters, like hurricanes or floods, while condo insurance may require separate policies for this type of coverage.
